Why Minecraft Beta?

The beta versions of Minecraft offer an experience unqiue to any other game. Modern minecraft, for my preferences, has too much freedom. I am a big believer in the creativity that comes from a restricted medium. In my own non-professional obersvations, limitations, and the pushing of such, is what breeds outstanding works of art. (Not that I'm calling Minecraft builds "art" per say... but similarities are there). Not only this, but it's also easier to stay commited when the tools available have been concentrated into their basic elements. Building in beta is necessarily expressionistic in style, which simultaniously makes aspects of capturing an idea both easier and harder in different areas. Importantly, these limitations and opportunities are what I find more fulfulling than modern versions. Not too distant from this either, I've always viewed my world more as a digital journal or sketch book. The different projects I work on can kind of represent different states of minds I was in and were started out as a response to that. I've developed a personal connection to all of my builds in someway. This is something I find really special that is able to be done in beta.

Concessions

Keep in mind, I am not the type of person to say "Mojang ruined minecraft" or "the game used to be so much better." I think this is stupid. While I recognize you can't measure statements like this objectively, if you could, I feel the newer versions of minecraft would be an objectively better "game." I still love seeing what people are able to do with the new blocks and features that get added every once and a while. To date, I have no problems with the direction they've taken the game content wise. (The more explicitly microsoft actions are an entirely different story).

Does any of this have to do with nostalgia?

No. While I did play older versions of Minecraft when I was younger, playing beta for this long has since stripped any nostalgic feelings connected to it. This era of games, to me, just have an appealing art direction that stands out against the modern videogame landscape.

What got you started?

I saw Youtube videos of people showing off their old Beta worlds. Thought it was pretty cool and realized there was kind of a small scene developing around this. Since I was struggling to maintain a world I would play consistently, I realized this was the exact thing I needed.

How do I get started?

You have to go into installations and do stuff around there idk. Remeber it should be b1.7.3 (or whatever beta/alpha version), if you have a hunger bar you've gone b1.8 and beyond.
